Haffenreffer Museum Program, Hopi Tribe

Today we enjoyed our final presentation from Mrs. Silvia of the Haffenreffer Museum!  We learned about a fascinating tribe from the Southwest called the Hopi.  The Hopi are ancestors of the Anasazi and live in houses made of stone and adobe clay.  We enjoyed learning about how they survive in the harsh dry climate of the Southwest and some really interesting parts of their culture, like how they name the new babies (see photos below), the butterfly dance (see photos below), and how they ground corn and peppers for their food (see photo above).  We also summed up what we learned about all of the tribes Mrs. Silvia presented this year and discussed how the climate, geography, and resources really shaped how the people lived.  What an amazing wrap up to our social studies unit on the United States!
